Mary Jeanne van Appledorn was a highly respected American composer and educator who was born on October 2 , 1927, in Holland, Michigan, and passed away on December 12, 2014. She graduated as valedictorian in 1945 and went on to achieve a Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan in 1949. She furthered her education, receiving a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Colorado in 1952 and a Ph.D. in composition from Eastman School of Music in 1966.

Mary Jeanne van Appledorn was a prolific composer , with a wide range of styles, including chamber music, orchestral music, vocal music, and solo pieces. Some of her notable works include "Contrast," "Set of Five," and "Reeds Afire." Mary Jeanne van Appledorn's compositions were highly regarded , and her work was performed across the United States and Europe.
