Martin-Joseph Mengal (1784-1851) was a Belgian composer, conductor, and educator. He was born in Ghent, Belgium, and studied music with his father, a violinist, before attending the Paris Conservatory, where he studied violin with Rodolphe Kreutzer and composition with Jean-Francois Lesueur.

After returning to Belgium, Mengal began his career as a conductor, leading orchestras in Ghent, Brussels, and Antwerp. He also held several teaching positions, including Director of the Royal Conservatory of Ghent from 1835 to 1851.

As a composer , Mengal wrote instrumental works such as symphonies, chamber music, and solo pieces for various instruments, including the horn. He also composed operas, including Le Vampire, which was premiered in Ghent in 1826, and several ballets.

Mengal's music is characterized by its lyricism and melodiousness, and he was regarded as one of the most important composers of his time in Belgium. Despite his success, however, his music fell out of favor in the years following his death and is now largely forgotten, with only a few of his works still occasionally performed.

In addition to his musical activities, Mengal was also involved in politics, serving as a member of the Belgian House of Representatives from 1848 to 1851. He died in Brussels in 1851 at the age of 67.
