Manuel Mendes was a Portuguese composer and teacher who lived during the Renaissance period. He is considered one of the greatest composers Portugal has ever known. Manuel Mendes is known for his contribution to religious music, particularly Requiem masses. He composed many Requiem masses of different textures, but sadly only a few of his works have survived to this day.

Manuel Mendes was born in Portugal in the early 16th century. He first became a priest, but later he decided to pursue his passion for music. He studied music with some of the best composers of his time, including Duarte Lobo and Manuel Cardoso. Later, he became a music teacher himself, and some of his students would go on to become famous Portuguese composers of the early 17th century , such as Filipe de Magalhães.

Manuel Mendes was famous for his Requiem masses, which were very popular in Portugal during his time. His most famous work was his four-voice Requiem mass, which is considered a masterpiece of Portuguese sacred music. He is also known for his contributions to the development of sacred music in Portugal and his influence on other composers of his time.

Manuel Mendes died on September 24, 1605, in Portugal, at the age of 71. Although many of his works have been lost, his contributions to Portuguese sacred music have left a lasting impact on the country's musical culture.
