Manuel Fernández Caballero (1835-1906) was a Spanish composer who is well-known for his contributions to the genre of zarzuela, a form of Spanish operetta. He was born on March 14, 1835, in Murcia, Spain and passed away on February 26, 1906, in Madrid, Spain. He is regarded as one of the fathers of the zarzuela, and his compositions are still performed today.
Caballero studied music at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid and was a student of Francisco Asenjo Barbieri. He wrote his first zarzuela, "Tres madres para una hija," at the age of 19 , and later went on to compose over 70 other zarzuelas, as well as numerous other works.
Caballero's zarzuelas were praised for their melodic richness and harmonic innovation. Some of his most famous zarzuela works include "Chateau Margaux," "Gigantes y cabezudos," and "El dúo de La Africana". He also composed the operetta "La viejecita" and the comic opera "El puñao de rosas".
In addition to his composing career, Caballero was also active as a conductor and teacher. He was honored with numerous awards throughout his lifetime for his contributions to Spanish music, including the prestigious Lazo de Isabel la Católica in 1897.
Today, Caballero is remembered as one of the most important Spanish composers of the 19th century, particularly for his zarzuelas. His music continues to be performed in Spain and around the world.
