She started to study music at an early age and soon became a virtuoso pianist, violinist, and clarinetist.

Despite facing obstacles as a woman in the male-dominated field of music composition during her time, Luna Alcalay was determined to chase her passion. She composed over 300 original works that ranged from symphonies to chamber music, and her compositions were often characterized by their complex rhythms, intricate harmonies, and unique blending of traditional and modern musical elements.

Luna Alcalay's interest in music led her to pursue a career in music education, and she taught at various music schools, including the "Rossini" Conservatory in Pesaro. She was also involved in music research and was interested in the music of non-Western cultures.

One of Luna Alcalay's major works was the oratorio, "Liberazione," which celebrated the end of World War II. It was premiered to great critical acclaim in 1946 in Rome. Another notable composition is her ballet, "Girotondo," which was performed by the La Scala Ballet Company in Milan in 1952.
