Count Luka Sorkocevic was a prominent composer from the Republic of Ragusa (now Dubrovnik) in southernmost Croatia, born on January 13, 1734. He hailed from a family of wealthy and influential nobility in Dubrovnik, and received a quality musical education under the guidance of Italian masters. Although he showed a preference for the violin as a young man, he eventually turned to composition as his main focus.

Sorkocevic is known for his instrumental music, particularly his string quartets and symphonies. His music was characterized by a blend of classical and baroque styles, and was highly influential in the development of Croatian music during the second half of the 18th century. His music has been preserved and is still performed today, and is considered an invaluable part of Croatian cultural heritage.

In addition to his instrumental works, Sorkocevic also wrote a few vocal pieces. While these were not as numerous as his instrumental works, they are notable for their distinctive compositions and unique sound. His most famous vocal compositions are "Stabat Mater" and "Te Deum."

Sorkocevic passed away on July 2, 1789, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the musical landscape of Croatia in the 18th century. His contributions to music are recognized and celebrated to this day, with many of his works being performed and recorded by contemporary musicians and ensembles.
