Liza Lehmann was a British composer, singer, and pianist, born on July 11th, 1862, in London, England. She came from an artistic family and showed a talent for music from a young age. Later in life, she became a well-respected composer, especially known for her songs, which were often inspired by poetry.
Lehmann's career began in the 1880s when she composed music for Gilbert and Sullivan's operas. She became prominent with her composition of the children's song "There are fairies at the bottom of our garden," which became a hugely popular song in England. She also wrote over 50 other songs, including "Ah, Moon of My Delight," "A Song of Life," and "Birdsongs at Eventide."
As well as the songs she composed, Lehmann was also a talented singer and pianist herself. She was known for her exceptional performances, and her music was highly regarded during her lifetime. Throughout her career, she collaborated with a variety of famous musicians and performers, including George Bernard Shaw, who wrote the lyrics for several of her songs.
Lehmann became a member of the Royal Academy of Music in 1924, where she held the position of Professor of Singing from 1924 to 1930. She continued to compose music and perform throughout her life, and her music remained popular both in the UK and internationally.
Liza Lehmann was a pioneering female composer at a time when few women were able to achieve careers in music. Her legacy lives on through her music, which continues to be appreciated by musicians and music lovers alike.
