She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Bennington College in Vermont before going to the United States in 1977 to study composition with Henry Brant. Bouchard has been an active composer, orchestrator, conductor, and producer for over 35 years.
Bouchard is one of Canada's most prominent contemporary composers , and she has received numerous commissions to write music for an eclectic group of artists from all over the world. Her works range from small ensembles to large orchestral pieces, with a focus on exploring the intersection of acoustic and electronic sounds.
