Liana Alexandra was a Romanian composer who was born on May 27, 1947, in Bucharest, Romania. She was one of the most renowned composers of contemporary classical music in Romania, gaining worldwide recognition for her innovative works.
Alexandra was a child prodigy and began her music studies at an early age. She studied composition with some of the most esteemed Romanian composers, including Aurel Stroe and Tiberiu Olah. After completing her studies at the National University of Music Bucharest, she became a professor of composition at the same institution.
Her music was heavily influenced by Romanian folk music, which she blended into a unique style characterized by its haunting harmonies, complex rhythms, and unconventional soundscapes. Her compositions range from chamber music to full symphonies and have been performed around the world.
Alexandra was also an advocate for new music and co-founded the Musica Nova International Festival in Bucharest with her husband, Aurel Stroe, in 1971. She helped to introduce contemporary Romanian music to an international audience and was closely associated with the avant-garde movement of the 1970s.
Throughout her career, Alexandra received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to music. She also served as a jury member for many international music competitions and was a founding member of the Romanian Society of Women Composers.
Tragically, Liana Alexandra passed away on April 10, 2011, after a long battle with cancer. Her legacy lives on through her innovative and beautiful music, which continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
