Lawrance Collingwood was an English composer born in Manchester in 1887. He studied music at the Royal Manchester College of Music and later at the Royal College of Music in London. His initial training was as a violinist, but he later became interested in composition. His mentors included Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Gustav Holst, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Collingwood's music often reflected his interest in folk music. Some of his notable works include "The Forsaken Merman," which is a choral setting of a poem by Matthew Arnold, as well as the "Sinfonia Quasi Una Fantasia No. 2" and "Clarinet Concerto."
Collingwood was also known for his love of nature, which often appeared in his music. One example of this is his "Pastoral Suite" for orchestra, which evokes the sights and sounds of nature through its use of melodies and harmonies.
Aside from his work as a composer, Collingwood was also a musicologist and edited several collections of traditional English folk songs. He was interested in the history and evolution of English folk music, and his research influenced his own compositions.
Collingwood died in 1965, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful and unique music. His work continues to be performed and enjoyed by music lovers and scholars alike.
