Laurent Belissen was a French Baroque composer who was born in 1693 and died on February 12, 1762. He is known primarily for his religious music, particularly his Grands motets. These works were performed in churches and cathedrals throughout France during the 18th century and were highly regarded for their intricate harmonies and virtuosic vocal writing.

Belissen was an important figure in the French musical scene of the time, and his music was featured in the concerts of the Concert Spirituel, one of the most important concert series in 18th-century Paris. He was highly esteemed by his contemporaries, including composer Jean-Philippe Rameau, who referred to Belissen as a "master of harmony".

In addition to his sacred works, Belissen also composed instrumental music and operas. Unfortunately, many of his secular works have been lost or destroyed over time, and his surviving catalog focuses primarily on his religious works.

Today, Laurent Belissen is remembered as one of the most important French composers of the Baroque era. While his music may not be as well-known as that of his contemporaries like Jean-Baptiste Lully or François Couperin, his intricate harmonies and innovative vocal writing continue to captivate audiences and musicians alike.
