Short bio Kees van Baaren
Full biography Kees van Baaren
Kees van Baaren (1906-1970) was a Dutch composer, conductor, and teacher, who played a significant role in the development of contemporary music in the Netherlands. He was born in Rotterdam, where he studied music theory and composition with Willem Pijper. Later, he studied conducting with Felix von Weingartner in Basel and upon returning to the Netherlands became a conductor of various orchestras.
Van Baaren was one of the first Dutch composers to embrace dodecaphony and serialism , though he never fully adhered to it in his own works. He was, however, an influential teacher, and as head of the composition department at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, he mentored several generations of Dutch composers, including Louis Andriessen and Theo Bruins.
In addition to his career as a composer and teacher, van Baaren was also active as a conductor, leading the Residentie Orchestra and the Hague Philharmonic. He received numerous awards during his career, including the prestigious Kees van Baaren Prize , which was established in his name in 1972 and is awarded every two years to a Dutch composer for a new work.
Today, van Baaren's music is recognized as an important contribution to the development of contemporary music in the Netherlands, and his influence can be felt through the works of his many students.
