Jurriaan Andriessen began his musical career playing the piano and the violin as a child and later studied with Hendrik Andriessen and Olivier Messiaen during his formative years. He went on to study in Paris for several years before returning to the Netherlands to teach music and begin his composition career.
Andriessen's music was heavily influenced by the works of his father and Messiaen, as well as the music of other contemporary composers like Igor Stravinsky and Pierre Boulez. His compositional style was known for its use of intricate rhythms and harmonies, and his works often featured unconventional instrumentation, including electronic instruments and experimental percussion instruments.
