Julius Rietz was a German composer, conductor, cellist and music teacher who lived from December 28, 1812, to September 12, 1877. He was born in the city of Berlin, and at a young age showed exceptional talent in music. His parents, who were both involved in music in their own way, recognized and supported his talent, and he began receiving formal musical training at the age of 11.

Rietz went on to become a prolific composer, with over 100 works to his name, including symphonies, chamber pieces, choral works, operas, and songs. Some of his most famous compositions include his concerto for cello and orchestra in A minor, his symphony No. 1 in C minor, and his oratorio “King David.” He was also particularly known for his arrangements and transcriptions of works by other composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, and Mendelssohn.

In addition to his work as a composer, Rietz was also a highly respected conductor and teacher. He held various conducting positions throughout his career, including at the Royal Opera in Berlin and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. He was also a sought-after music teacher, and among his students were several notable musicians, including Julius Stockhausen, Hermann Levi, and the American conductor Theodore Thomas.

Rietz was highly regarded by his contemporaries, and his music was widely performed and admired during his lifetime. However, after his death, his music fell out of favor and is now less frequently performed. Nonetheless, his contributions to classical music have earned him a lasting place in its history.
