Short bio Julian Carrillo
Full biography Julian Carrillo
Julian Carrillo Trujillo (January 28 , 1875 – September 9, 1965) was a Mexican composer, conductor, violinist, and music theorist. He is considered a leading exponent of microtonal music and is famous for developing a microtonal system called El Sonido 13 (The 13th Sound) in the 1920s, which was the culmination of his lifelong search for a new system of musical tuning.
Carrillo began his music career as a violinist at a young age and went on to study composition in Mexico City and Europe. He became known for his avant-garde compositions, which often explored microtones and unconventional tonalities. He also worked as a conductor, teacher, and writer on music, and served as an administrator for the National Conservatory of Mexico.
Despite the importance of his contributions to music, Carrillo's work was largely overlooked during his lifetime and he struggled to find recognition. It was not until after his death that his music began to gain wider recognition, and he is now recognized as a pioneer of microtonal music and a significant figure in 20th-century music.
Several of Carrillo's compositions have been recorded and are available for listening, including his orchestral works, which showcase his unique style and innovative use of microtonality. His impact on modern music is undeniable, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of composers and musicians.
