In the 1970s, Julia Tsenova studied composition at the State Academy of Music in Sofia, where she developed her talent and worked with fellow composers to create a new wave of Bulgarian music. During this time, she also established herself as a soloist, performing her own pieces both in Bulgaria and abroad.
