Juhan Aavik, born on February 8, 1884, was an Estonian composer, conductor, and music teacher who played a significant role in the development of Estonian music. Aavik was one of the pioneers of choral music composition in Estonia and made an immense contribution to the establishment of national music in the country.

In his early years, Aavik was interested in literature, which influenced his style of composing. He studied both musicology and composition at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he acquired an extensive knowledge of music from different cultures. Aavik also had an excellent understanding of Estonian folk music and worked diligently to preserve and promote it through his compositions.

Aavik is best known for his choral compositions, which were revolutionary in their approach towards Estonian music. He was one of the first composers to use Estonian folk songs in his choral works, and his use of modal harmonies was a new sound in Estonian music at the time.

Aavik's most famous works are his choral compositions, such as "Aimast Aega," "Lauliku Lapsepõli," and "Vanemuise Laulud," all of which are still performed in Estonia today. Aavik also wrote symphonic works, including an "Estonian Rhapsody" and several piano pieces, but his focus remained on choral music.

In addition to composing, Aavik also worked as a music teacher and conductor. He taught music at several schools in Estonia, and in 1920, he became the head of the Estonian Choral Society. Aavik's contributions to Estonian music were recognized during his lifetime, and he was awarded the Order of Estonian Red Cross in 1933.

Juhan Aavik passed away on February 18, 1982, leaving behind a legacy of musical compositions that continue to influence Estonian music to this day. His progressive approach to choral music composition helped establish national music in Estonia and made him a leading figure of the Estonian music scene.
