Juan Jose Castro was an Argentine composer, conductor, and teacher, born on March 7, 1895, in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and passed away on September 3, 1968, in Buenos Aires. He received his music education from Eduardo Fornarini and Manuel Posadas and went on to become one of the most important composers in Argentina during the first half of the twentieth century. Castro's compositions are known for their nationalistic and folkloric elements, including his well-known "Corales Criollos."
Castro was also a prominent conductor, leading the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de La Plata and the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de Buenos Aires. Additionally, he was a dedicated teacher, and his students included notable Argentine composers such as Luis Gianneo, Juan Carlos Paz, and Mariano Etkin.
Castro's works encompassed various genres, including opera, ballet, chamber music, and choral music. Among his most notable compositions are "Ropa de Oro," "El gaucho," and "Campanas en la noche." He was also the first Argentine composer to write a concerto for the bandoneon, an instrument commonly associated with Argentine tango music.
Today, Juan Jose Castro is regarded as one of the most important and influential composers in Argentine musical history. His works continue to be performed and celebrated, both in Argentina and internationally, and his legacy as a composer, conductor, and teacher endures to this day.
