Juan García de Zéspedes was a Mexican composer, singer, and organist. He was born in Puebla de los Angeles, Mexico in 1619 and died in Mexico City in 1678. García de Zéspedes is considered one of the most important composers of baroque music in Mexico.
He was born into a musical family, his father being an organist and his mother a singer. García de Zéspedes received his early musical education from his parents and later studied under the tutelage of prominent composers in Mexico City.
García de Zéspedes is best known for his religious music, particularly his villancicos, a form of religious song with a popular character. He wrote many works for the Cathedral of Puebla, where he served as the maestro de capilla, or music director, for several years.
His music was influenced by both Spanish and indigenous music, resulting in a unique sound that blended the two styles. García de Zéspedes' music often features lively rhythms and energetic melodies, making it popular among listeners.
García de Zéspedes' contribution to baroque music in Mexico is significant, as he helped to establish a distinctive Mexican style that would influence future generations of composers.
