Short bio Juan Crisostomo Arriaga
Full biography Juan Crisostomo Arriaga
Juan Crisostomo Arriaga, also known as "the Spanish Mozart," was a highly talented Basque composer born on January 27, 1806, in Bilbao, Spain. He was known for his extraordinary precocity as a violinist and composer. At the age of 11, he started composing, and by the age of 13, he had written his first opera. Unfortunately, his potential was cut short by his early death at the age of 19 on January 17 , 1826.
Arriaga's music was heavily influenced by German and Italian styles, and he is particularly known for his string quartets and symphonies. Despite his short life, Juan Crisostomo Arriaga left behind a significant body of work including chamber music, vocal music, and orchestral music. Today, he is considered one of the most important Spanish composers of his time and an important link between the Classical and Romantic periods.
Arriaga's music remained largely forgotten until it was revived by Basque musical nationalism at the end of the 19th century. His music has since gained widespread recognition, and many of his works have been recorded and performed by contemporary musicians. Some of his most famous works include his string quartets and his Symphony in D.
