Full biography Joseph Schwantner
Joseph Schwantner is an American composer born on March 22, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois. He is best known for his chamber music, orchestral music, and works for percussion. He studied at the Chicago Conservatory, Northwestern University, and the Yale School of Music.
Schwantner has received numerous awards for his work, including the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1988 for his composition "Aftertones of Infinity." He has also been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Schwantner's music is characterized by its use of orchestral color and timbre, as well as intricate rhythmic structures. Many of his works feature percussion prominently, and he has written a number of works specifically for percussion ensemble.
In addition to his work as a composer, Schwantner has also served as Composer-in-Residence with several major symphony orchestras, including the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra. He has also taught composition at a number of institutions, including the Eastman School of Music and the Yale School of Music.
Schwantner has cited a wide range of influences on his work, including the music of Bela Bartok, Igor Stravinsky, and Edgar Varese, as well as the writings of Henry David Thoreau. He continues to be an active composer and his music is regularly performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world.
