Joseph Schmittbaur, also known as Joseph Schmitt, was a German composer born on November 8, 1718, and died on October 24, 1809. He was a well-known Kapellmeister, instrument maker, and music teacher who contributed to the development of the Classical style, particularly in chamber music.
Schmitt was born in the city of Elsenfeld in the Electorate of Mainz, where he began his studies with Johann Heinrich Rolle. Later, he studied with influential composers such as Johann Stamitz and Franz Xaver Richter.
Schmitt's compositions include numerous symphonies, concertos for various instruments, chamber music, and vocal works. His music is characterized by a harmonically rich and melodically memorable style, which shows his masterful command of the Classical style.
In addition to his career as a composer, Schmitt worked as a Kapellmeister in Mainz, Mannheim, and at the court of the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to communicate his artistic vision to his performers and colleagues.
