Josef Matthias Hauer (March 19 , 1883 - September 22, 1959) was an Austrian composer and music theorist , born in Wiener Neustadt. He is known for his contributions to the development of atonal music, independent of and simultaneous to Arnold Schoenberg. He was also the first composer to develop the twelve-tone technique, which he called the "twelve-tone game."
Hauer received his early musical training from his father, who was the town musician. He later studied music at the Vienna Conservatory from 1901 to 1906. After completing his studies, he worked as a music teacher in various places, including Graz, Grazbach, and Vienna.
Hauer's work as a composer was heavily influenced by his interest in Eastern philosophy and mysticism, as well as his knowledge of musical history and theory. His music often features complex rhythmic patterns and unconventional harmonies, and he was particularly interested in the use of microtones and non-traditional scales.
In addition to his work as a composer, Hauer was also a respected music theorist. He wrote extensively on the subject of atonal music and developed a system of music notation that made it possible to notate microtones. He also developed a theory of tropes, which he believed could be used to create new musical forms.
Hauer's music was largely ignored during his lifetime, but it has gained recognition in recent years. His work is admired for its complexity and its challenging, experimental nature. Despite the similarities between Hauer's music and the work of Schoenberg, the two men are known to have had a friendly relationship and to have discussed their work with each other.
