Jos Evangelista (1943-2023) was a Spanish-Canadian composer who was devoted to both contemporary and non-Western music. Evangelista’s music was known for its rhythmic energy that blended seamlessly with his melodic writing. He wrote over 80 works throughout his career, and was highly respected in the music industry.
Born in Valencia, Spain, Evangelista initially pursued studies in physics before he eventually turned to music. He received several prizes and awards for his work , including the prize of the Spanish National Orchestra in 1970 and the Jules-Léger Prize for New Chamber Music in 1984. Evangelista was also the guest composer of the Ferienkurse fr Neue Musik at Darmstadt in 1986.
Throughout his life , Evangelista continued to evolve and experiment with his compositions. Instead of writing tonal music that sounded pleasing to the ear , he pushed boundaries and consistently explored new forms of expression and sounds in his work. His relentless pursuit of exploration and innovation are what made him a respected composer in the world of contemporary music.
Jos Evangelista’s contributions to the music industry will not be forgotten. His passing in January 2023 was a great loss, but his legacy lives on through his music.
