Jonathan Battishill was an English composer born in 1738 in London. He is best known for his compositions of church music and popular songs , although he also wrote operas, keyboard music, sacred music, and glees. He started his musical career in London where he became a church organist, and then later moved to Bath where he worked as a tenor and composer. Battishill's career as a composer began with songs and glees, but he later moved on to writing sacred music, including church anthems and hymns. His compositions are considered to be influenced by the works of composers such as Handel and Purcell. One of his most famous works is the anthem "O Lord, Look Down from Heaven", which is still performed today. Battishill also collaborated with prominent writers of his time, setting their texts to music in his compositions. Despite having a promising career, Battishill's life was cut short, and he passed away in 1801 at the age of 63.
