Full biography John Stanley
John Stanley was an English composer and organist born on January 17th, 1712 in London. He began playing the harpsichord and organ at a young age, and by the age of eight he had already impressed Handel with his skills. Despite losing his sight in an accident at the age of two, Stanley went on to become a prolific composer and performer of his time.
Stanley wrote a fair amount of his own music, but also supported himself mainly as a performer. He conducted several Handel oratorios during the final years of Handel's life. Stanley's music was mainly instrumental, including concertos, sonatas, and voluntaries for organ, but he also wrote vocal music, including songs and operas.
One of Stanley's most famous works is the "Trumpet Voluntary," which is often mistakenly attributed to Jeremiah Clarke. Stanley's music was well-regarded in his time, and he was known for his improvisational skills as a performer.
Surviving pictures of Stanley show clearly the effects of his childhood domestic accident that left him blinded at the age of two. However, he overcame this obstacle and went on to become a successful composer and performer. Stanley died on May 19th, 1786 in London at the age of 74.
In conclusion, John Stanley was an accomplished composer and performer of his time. His music was well-regarded and had a significant impact on the musical world of the 18th century. Despite his blindness, he overcame this obstacle and left a lasting legacy which is still appreciated today.
