John Maxwell Geddes was a Scottish composer who lived from 1941 to 2017. He was born in Edinburgh and went on to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). After his studies , Geddes launched into a prolific career, creating a legacy of many fine works.

Throughout his career , Geddes composed a range of works, including three symphonies, numerous chamber works, concertos, and choral pieces. He was also known for exploring unconventional instrumentation, such as setting music to be performed by an egg.

Geddes gained recognition for his work both nationally and internationally. In 1985, he was commissioned by the BBC to create Voyager, music for the television series of the same name. He also held the position of composer-in-residence at the Duff House in Banff, Scotland, and at the University of Hertfordshire.

Geddes had a significant impact on Scottish music, and he was known for his efforts in promoting access to music education for all. His work extended beyond composing to include teaching and conducting. In 2017, at the time of his death, he was conducting an orchestra of care home residents and lunch club members for a project called If It Wasn't For Their Wellies.
