John Kinsella was a prolific composer, self-taught musician, and head of music at RTE, Ireland's national broadcasting service. Born in Dublin in 1932, Kinsella studied the violin and viola at the Dublin College of Music before devoting himself to composition. He is widely regarded as the most prolific Irish symphonist, having written a total of 11 symphonies in addition to several concertos, chamber music, and operas.
Kinsella's music is characterized by its daring harmonies, complex rhythmic structures, and imaginative orchestration. His works exhibit a unique blend of modernist techniques with traditional Irish musical elements, showcasing his deep love and appreciation for his homeland's musical heritage.
Kinsella worked for many years as an administrator and conductor, serving as the head of music at RTE and conducting the RTE Symphony Orchestra. He was also active as a teacher and mentor, helping to nurture the next generation of Irish composers.
Throughout his career, Kinsella received numerous honors and awards, including the prestigious Saoi award from Aosdána, an association of Irish artists. He was also a member of the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
