John Farmer (c. 1570 – c. 1601) was an English composer who was born during the Elizabethan period ). He was an important figure in the English Madrigal School, a group of composers who wrote polyphonic vocal music in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

Although Farmer had a brief career, he was a highly regarded composer in his time and wrote many madrigals. His most famous composition is "Fair Phyllis I saw sitting all alone," a lively and charming madrigal that depicts a shepherdess. The song is still widely performed and studied today.

In addition to his work as a composer, Farmer was also an accomplished organist. He was apprenticed to his uncle Henry Farmer , who was a respected organist and composer. This early training likely had a significant impact on his career as a musician.
