John Coprario, also known as Giovanni Coprario or Coperario , was an English composer and viol player who lived during the post-Elizabethan era in England. Coprario was highly respected for his songs, instrumental music, and his contributions to ensemble music. He was one of the leading composers of his time and worked under the patronage of Sir Robert Cecil and Edward Seymour , Earl of Hertford.

It should be noted that there is some debate over whether Coprario was taking credit for other composers' works. Some scholars believe that Coprario was merely using different pseudonyms, while others suggest he was plagiarizing. Regardless, Coprario's musical contributions were highly influential.

Coprario served at the English court from 1605 to 1626 as lutenist , playing viol in the King's private music and serving as a composer for important occasions. He was known for his consort music, which was a style of music played by a small group of performers. Coprario introduced William Lawes, another notable English composer, to Charles the Prince of Wales when Lawes was a child.

Overall, John Coprario was a highly influential English composer during the post-Elizabethan era. His contributions to music, particularly in the development of ensemble music, are highly regarded and his legacy lives on to this day.
