John Amner was an English composer born in Ely in 1579 and died in 1641. He is known for his compositions of sacred works and had a close association with Ely Cathedral. Although not widely celebrated during the Renaissance era, his music in Sacred Hymnes shows that he was capable of writing in a number of styles. He composed works for private devotion, which were performed during the Jacobean era.
Amner's Sacred Hymnes, published in 1615, consists of compositions for three, four, five, and six voices. In these hymns, he exhibited his technical control by writing consecutive harmonies and instances of melodic imitation. His compositions were performed on various occasions such as Choir Sunday, at the Cathedral, and during the commemoration of the Gunpowder Plot. John Amner also composed music for viol and voices, which were popular during the Jacobean period.
Although not widely recognized during his time, Amner's music has been rediscovered and appreciated by contemporary audiences. His works have been featured in concerts and recordings, bringing attention to his compositions. John Amner's legacy as a composer still endures to this day.
