Short bio Johannes Ciconia
Full biography Johannes Ciconia
Johannes Ciconia was a late medieval and early Renaissance Franco-Flemish composer and music theorist. He was born around the year 1370 into the family of an organist in Liège, Belgium and worked throughout the southern Low Countries and northern Italy.
Ciconia's compositional output includes both sacred and secular music. He was known for his use of complex rhythms, virtuosic vocal writing, and experimentation with harmony. He was also noted for his contributions to music theory, including his treatise "De proportionibus" which discussed the mathematical and philosophical aspects of music.
Ciconia's music was highly regarded during his lifetime and he was considered a respected and influential composer of his time. Many of his compositions were written for wealthy patrons, and he held several important positions as a composer and performer throughout his career.
Although his output was relatively small, with only around 20 works definitively attributed to him, Ciconia's music has survived in greater quantities than that of many of his contemporaries. His music continues to be studied and performed today, and he remains a significant figure in the history of Western music.
