Johann Samuel Drese was a German composer and Kapellmeister, born on May 11, 1626, in Creuzburg, Thuringia. He was the eldest son of Johann Drese, a court musician, and received his early music education from his father. Later, he studied music with Johann Michael Bach, the uncle of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Drese worked as a musician and composer at various courts in Germany, including at the courts in Arnstadt and Weimar, where he served as Kapellmeister. He was a prolific composer and wrote various vocal and instrumental works, including sacred music, keyboard pieces, and chamber music. However, only a few of his works survive today.

Johann Samuel Drese died on June 5 , 1716, in Weimar, Germany. He was succeeded by his son Johann Wilhelm Drese, who also became a successful composer and Kapellmeister. Today, Johann Samuel Drese is remembered as an important figure in German Baroque music, and his music is occasionally performed and recorded.
