Johann Philipp Fortsch (1713-1767) was a German composer of the Baroque period. Born in the town of Eisenach in central Germany, Fortsch was surrounded by music from a young age. He was the son of Johann Christoph Fortsch, a veteran musician and member of the local court orchestra. It was under his father's tutelage that Fortsch began learning the violin and other musical instruments.

Fortsch was a prolific composer throughout his lifetime, producing numerous instrumental and vocal works. His compositions showcase his mastery of Baroque music, featuring elaborate counterpoint, complex harmonies, and ornate melodies. Some of his most notable works include his five-part sinfonias, concertos for harpsichord and strings, and cantatas.

Fortsch also worked as a music director and conductor in various cities throughout Germany. He held positions in Weimar, Zwickau, and Leipzig, where he was the music director of the St. Peter's Church. During his time in Leipzig, Fortsch was also a member of the city's Collegium Musicum, a musical society founded by the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

Despite his reputation as a skilled composer and musician, Fortsch's music fell out of favor in the years following his death. It was not until the 20th century that his works were rediscovered and gained recognition for their beauty and complexity. Today, Fortsch is recognized as one of the leading composers of the German Baroque period, and his music continues to be enjoyed by audiences around the world.
