Short bio Johann Nepomuk David
Full biography Johann Nepomuk David
Johann Nepomuk David (1895-1977) was a prolific composer and music theorist from Austria. He is known for his contributions to choral music, and many of his works are still performed today.
David was born on June 30, 1895, in St. Marein, Austria. Growing up, he showed an interest in music, and his parents provided him with the opportunity to study at music schools. In 1913, he moved to Vienna to study music, where he was able to study under some of Austria's greatest composers at the time, including Arnold Schoenberg.
During World War I, David served in the Austro-Hungarian army, where he was captured and held as a prisoner of war for three years. He continued to compose music during this time, and some of his works were performed by fellow prisoners.
After the war, David returned to Vienna, where he continued to compose music and teach. He became interested in choral music, which he believed was an essential part of the fabric of Austrian art and culture. He went on to write many choral works, including a series of masses, motets, and oratorios.
In addition to his choral works, David is known for his contributions to music theory. He published several books on music theory, including "Streben und Gestalt" (1935) and "Metronomische Studien" (1955).
David's music is characterized by its use of tonality, though he also experimented with atonality in some of his earlier works. He drew inspiration from both traditional folk music and contemporary composers of his time, including Schoenberg and Bartok.
Johann Nepomuk David died on December 22, 1977, in Salzburg, Austria. His music continues to be performed and celebrated by choirs and music lovers around the world.
