Johann Kuhnau was a German Baroque composer, born on April 6, 1660, in Geising, Saxony. He was a notable figure in his time and was known not only for his music but also for his intellectual prowess. Kuhnau was a polymath, a linguistic scholar, a writer, and a philosopher. He was also an excellent keyboard player and served as the organist for the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

Kuhnau was best-known for his contributions to keyboard music. He is credited with being one of the first composers to write keyboard sonatas, and his works in this genre are considered among his most important achievements. Kuhnau's "Biblical Sonatas" are particularly noteworthy, as they are the first to incorporate programmatic elements, with each sonata representing a particular biblical story.

Aside from his keyboard music, Kuhnau also composed vocal and instrumental works, including church cantatas (of which only a few remain).
