Short bio Johann Gottfried Muthel
Full biography Johann Gottfried Muthel
Johann Gottfried Muthel (1728-1788) was a German composer and keyboard virtuoso. He was born in Mölln and received his musical training from Johann Sebastian Bach, who was his godfather. Muthel's musical career began in 1747 when he was appointed chamber musician and organist at the court of Duke Christian Ludwig II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. He also served as a copyist for Bach and other composers, including Handel and Telemann.
Muthel had a small but secure place in music history due to his technically demanding keyboard works, particularly his sonatas. He was also respected for his abilities as an improviser, and for his skill on both the harpsichord and the organ. Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart , a German writer and music theorist, wrote of Muthel's harpsichord skill that "connoisseurs that have heard him cannot praise enough the clarity of his execution , the subtlety of his dynamics, the tastefulness of his embellishments, and overall the fullness and beauty of his tone."
Muthel was one of the last students of Bach and is considered to be one of the most notable composers to write in the Sturm und Drang idiom , with his works reflecting the changing musical trends of his time. His compositions include keyboard sonatas, concertos, and chamber music. Some of his most famous works include his Keyboard Concerto in B-flat major, his Sonata for Keyboard in D minor, and his Sonata in G minor for Violin and Harpsichord.
Overall, Johann Gottfried Muthel was a talented composer and keyboard virtuoso who made significant contributions to the music of his time. His works continue to be studied and performed today, and he remains an important figure in the history of classical music.
