He was born in Regensburg, Germany, into a musical family: his father Friedrich August Burgmüller and his younger brother Norbert Burgmüller were also composers. His mother was a pianist and singer.

Burgmüller is best known for his piano music, particularly his collection of 25 Études, which are still taught to piano students today. The Études were written in a progressive order, starting with simpler pieces suitable for beginners and gradually increasing in difficulty.
