Johann Franz Xaver Sterkel was a German composer who lived from 1750 to 1817. Sterkel's music is considered a blend of classical and early romantic styles, and he is remembered primarily for his piano works. Known for his virtuosic style of playing, Sterkel was also a prominent teacher and mentor to many young musicians of his time.

Born in Wertheim, Germany, Sterkel was the son of a notary. He first studied music with his father before moving to Mannheim, where he became a student of Johann Stamitz, one of the leading composers of the Mannheim School.

Sterkel continued his studies in Mannheim, where he became a member of the Mannheim Court Orchestra and the Mannheim Society for the Study of Music. His early works were mostly composed for the piano, and he soon became known for his virtuosic performances and innovative techniques.

In 1779, Sterkel left Mannheim for Paris, where he quickly established himself as a popular teacher and musician. He composed a number of works for the piano while in Paris, including his 1783 Sonata in C minor, which was considered one of his masterpieces.

Sterkel returned to Germany in 1784, settling in Augsburg, where he became the director of the local municipal band. He continued to compose and perform throughout his life, and many of his works were published during his lifetime. Sterkel's music was widely praised for its innovative style and virtuosic playing, and he was often compared to Mozart and Haydn.

Despite his significant contributions to the development of classical music, Sterkel's music has largely been forgotten in modern times. However, his innovative style and technical mastery continue to inspire musicians and composers to this day.
