Short bio Johann Christoph Pez
Full biography Johann Christoph Pez
Johann Christoph Pez (1664-1716) was a German composer and Kapellmeister , heavily influenced by the music of Italy. Although he was born and died in Germany, his music reflects the Italian style of the Baroque era. Pez was known for his instrumental compositions, including his concertos and overtures. He wrote works for a variety of instruments, from strings and woodwinds to brass and percussion.
Pez's contribution to vocal music is also noteworthy. He wrote a number of sacred and secular cantatas, hymns, and masses, some of which were based on the music of other composers. Pez's "Mass in A minor" BWV Anh 24 is believed to have been a source of inspiration for Johann Sebastian Bach, who copied the Kyrie and Gloria and expanded it with a melody line in his own work.
Despite his talents and popularity during his time, Pez's music fell out of favor after his death and remained largely forgotten until the 20th century. Today, his works are being rediscovered and appreciated by musicians and music lovers alike. Laura Cerutti, Il Giardino Armonico, and American Bach Soloists are among the ensembles and performers who have recorded Pez's music in recent years.
