Johann Christian Kittel was a German composer, organist, and teacher who was born in 1732 and died in 1809. He is known for his contributions to the development of German Baroque music and his teaching of music theory and composition. Kittel was one of the last students of Johann Sebastian Bach , and his music shows the influence of his teacher.
Kittel wrote a number of large-scale organ works such as double chorale preludes , as well as works for other instruments such as piano quartets. He is also known for his compositions for church choirs, which include hymns and chorales.
In addition to his work as a composer, Kittel was an accomplished organist and received many appointments throughout his career, including as the court organist for the Duke of Sachsen-Weimar and as an organist at the St. Trinitatis Church in Leipzig. Kittel was also a committed teacher and wrote several works on music theory and performance, including "Der angehende praktische Organist" which was published in 1801-08.
Despite his prolific output , Kittel's music was largely forgotten following his death, but has since been rediscovered and revived in recent years. Additionally, the discovery of his "Choralbuch" in 2018 has shed new light on his work and provided valuable insights into the development of German Baroque music.
