Johann Baptist Schenk was an Austrian composer born in Wiener Neustadt in 1753 and passed away in Vienna in 1836. He was a recognised composer and music theoretician in his lifetime , known for his traditional forms of composition. Schenk studied music with Joseph and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, Antonio Salieri, and Joseph Haydn. Until 1794 he was supported by Prince Auersperg who had appointed him as Kapellmeister.

Schenk composed a variety of works for the court theaters, including the Singspiel Der Dorfbarbier, as well as numerous sacred choral works. His sacred choral works, such as Asperges me and Scapulis suis, are still performed to this day. In addition to his choral works, Schenk also composed for chamber ensembles. His Quartetto for oboe, two English horns , and bassoon is a well-known example of his chamber music.

Schenk's style of composition was in line with Classical music traditions, which were dominant during his lifetime. He used traditional forms, such as the sonata form, in his works, and his compositions were characterised by clear melodies and harmonies. He was also known for his ability to write expressive music that conveyed emotion and meaning.
