Short bio Johann Baptist Cramer
Full biography Johann Baptist Cramer
Johann Baptist Cramer was a German-born English pianist, composer and music publisher who lived from 1771 to 1858. He was one of the leading pianists of the period of transition from Classicism to Romanticism. Cramer is best known for his piano studies, which have remained popular among piano students to this day.
Cramer started his musical career as a piano virtuoso, giving his first public performance at the age of ten. In 1784, he moved to Paris and studied piano with Johann Schobert. He then moved to London in 1789, where his career as a pianist took off. He performed regularly at concerts, often playing his own compositions. In 1824, he founded a music publishing house, which became a major force in the music industry.
As a composer, Cramer's most famous works are his piano studies, which are known for their technical challenges and musical lyricism. These studies have been hugely influential in piano pedagogy, and are still widely used by piano students today. Cramer also composed a number of sonatas and other pieces for piano , as well as concertos and chamber music.
During his lifetime, Cramer was highly respected as a musician and composer, and his influence can be felt in the music of his contemporaries. Beethoven, for example, reportedly borrowed from Cramer's works, and Schumann considered Cramer and Moscheles to be the only outstanding sonata composers of their time.
Today , Cramer is perhaps best known for his piano studies, which have remained popular among piano students for over 200 years. His legacy as a composer, pianist, and music publisher continues to be celebrated and remembered by musicians and music enthusiasts around the world.
