Johan Fredrik Berwald (1787-1861) was a Swedish violinist , conductor and composer. He was a cousin of another famed composer, Franz Berwald. Johan began touring with his father Georg Johan Abraham Berwald from 1795 , following him to St. Petersburg in 1801. After settling in Stockholm, Johan Fredrik Berwald was appointed as the director of the Haga Music Corps by the Swedish King, which was a group of musicians who played at the royal palace and gardens.

Johan Fredrik Berwald is known for his composition, Symphony in G minor, which premiered on December 2, 1843, at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, conducted by himself. The symphony was performed by the Royal Court Orchestra and was a great success.

Aside from his symphony, Johan Fredrik Berwald also composed chamber music, including quintets, quartets, and duos for violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Unfortunately, many of his compositions have been lost over time, and only a few of his works are available today.

Johan Fredrik Berwald's contributions to the musical scene in Sweden during his life have had a lasting impact on the country's music history. He was well-respected for his composition and conducting work, and his influence extended beyond his lifetime.
