Full biography João de Sousa Carvalho
João de Sousa Carvalho (1745-1798) was a prominent composer from Portugal who was renowned for his remarkable contribution to the country's music scene during the Baroque period ). He was born on February 22, 1745, in the town of Estremoz, Portugal. Carvalho was recognized as one of the most significant composers of his generation in Portugal and his musical pieces were particularly intricate and innovative.
Carvalho studied music under the guidance of several renowned teachers in Portugal, including João Pedro Carlos Gomes. He then went on to become the music teacher of the royal family in 1773, which proved to be a turning point in his career, as he received the support and encouragement of the Portuguese royalty.
Carvalho was a prolific composer who wrote chamber music, keyboard sonatas, and operas. His first courtly drama, L'Angelica, was created in the Italian opera style which became popular in Portugal at the time. Other notable works of Carvalho include his operas, Achille in Sciro, Artaserse, La Nitteti and Sesostri.
In addition to composing, Carvalho was actively involved in teaching and was well-regarded for his expertise in the musical theory. He provided guidance to many young performers during his lifetime and inspired them to continue pursuing their careers in music.
Today, Carvalho's work continues to inspire and fascinate listeners and performers from around the world. He remains an exceptional example of a Portuguese composer who made an indelible mark on the country's musical heritage.
