Jacobsen's early works were heavily influenced by the neoclassical style of composers such as Stravinsky, Bartok, and Hindemith. However, as his style evolved, he began to incorporate more modernist elements into his music. His later works are characterized by a highly personal style that involves complex harmonies, intricate rhythmic structures, and unconventional instrumental combinations.

Some of his most famous works include the opera "Peder Wessel," the oratorio "The Creation," and his Symphony No. 5.

Throughout his career, Jacobsen was a respected figure in the Danish music scene. He was a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and he received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Danish music. Jacobsen passed away on July 14, 2003, in the town of Holte, Denmark, but his music continues to be performed and celebrated by music lovers around the world.
