Short bio Jeanne Demessieux
Full biography Jeanne Demessieux
Jeanne Demessieux was a French composer, pianist, and organist who lived from 1921 to 1968. She is most well-known today for her compositions and performances on the pipe organ, which showcased her virtuosic abilities and unique style.
Demessieux began her career as a musician at a young age, studying both piano and organ as a child. She quickly established herself as a talented performer and composer, winning several awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1923, she was appointed titular organist at the church of La Madeleine in Paris, a position she held until her death.
Throughout her career, Demessieux played a major role in the revival of the French organ tradition, which had fallen out of favor during the early 20th century. She was a prolific composer, and her works for the organ are considered some of the finest examples of the genre. In addition to her organ compositions, Demessieux also wrote pieces for piano, as well as works for other instruments.
Although Demessieux's life was cut short by illness, her legacy as a composer and performer has endured. Her works continue to be performed and recorded by organists around the world, and she is considered one of the most important figures in the history of French organ music.
