Behrend studied at the Juilliard School in New York City under renowned pianist Josef Lhevinne. She made her debut as a professional pianist in 1939, at the age of 23, with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She later performed as a soloist with many of the leading orchestras in the United States, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Behrend was also a composer and wrote many works for piano , voice, and orchestra. She was particularly influenced by the music of American composers and was a strong advocate for promoting their work. Behrend believed that American music had a unique and important voice and should be celebrated and performed alongside the music of European composers.
