Short bio Jean Barraque
Full biography Jean Barraque
Jean Barraque (1928-1973) was a French composer and writer on music who developed an individual form of serialism. He studied at the Paris Conservatory with Jean Langlais and Olivier Messiaen. His music is characterized by complex rhythms, atonality and dense textures. Barraque's major works include the "Symphonie pour un homme seul" (Symphony for One Man Alone), which he composed in collaboration with Pierre Schaeffer, and the "Concerto pour six instruments" (Concerto for Six Instruments).
Barraque's music was often difficult to perform and initially met with limited success. However, his unique approach to serialism and innovative use of electronic music eventually garnered him praise and recognition.
Aside from his music, Barraque wrote extensively on musical theory and aesthetics. His writings focused on the concept of "integral serialism", a term he coined to describe his approach to composition. He believed that all elements of a musical work, including rhythm, dynamics and tone color, should be organized serially. This idea influenced many other composers, including Karlheinz Stockhausen.
Although he passed away at a young age, Barraque's influence on modern music continues to be felt today. His works have been performed and recorded by many renowned musicians, and his writings remain an important part of music theory.
