Short bio Jean-Baptiste Forqueray
Full biography Jean-Baptiste Forqueray
Jean-Baptiste Forqueray was a French composer and viola da gamba player who lived during the Baroque era. He was born in Paris in 1699 and was the son of another celebrated violist, Antoine Forqueray.
Jean-Baptiste Forqueray became famous as a composer in his own right, and he was especially well-known for his compositions for the viola da gamba, which was a popular instrument during the Baroque era. His music was characterized by its virtuosity and intricate ornamentation, which made it very challenging for musicians to play.
Forqueray's most famous works for viola da gamba include his two suites, La Marella and La Buisson, which are still performed and recorded by modern-day musicians. He also composed several vocal works, including cantatas and sonatas, which were well-regarded during his lifetime.
Despite his success as a composer, Forqueray's personal life was plagued by tragedy. He lost his wife and both of his sons at a young age, which left him deeply affected. He eventually retired from his career and died in 1782.
Today, Jean-Baptiste Forqueray is remembered as one of the most important composers of the French Baroque era. His music continues to be performed and recorded, and it is beloved by fans of early music around the world.
